Springvale Road Rail Alliance was committed to minimising and avoiding environmental impacts during construction. An environmental protection strategy was adopted that identified the environmental commitments of the project.

Key project objectives for minimising the impact on the local environment included:

  • Minimising the potential of dust and noise emissions caused by earthworks.
  • Protecting stormwater runoff to into surrounding waterways including Blackburn Lakes.
  • Maximising water capture on site for reuse.
  • Minimising waste sent to landfill.

The project worked closely with various stakeholders and continues to work with the local community.

To manage potential environmental risks and make the most of our opportunities the project:

  • Complied with all the relevant environmental legislation and other relevant environmental standards and guidelines.
  • Worked pro-actively with regulatory authorities, the community and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Was committed to prevention of pollution and minimised the adverse impacts of our activities on the environment.
  • Developed, implemented and maintained a Project Environment Protection Strategy.
  • Ensured that the design and construction phase of the new premium Nunawading Station and upgrade of Springvale Road, promoted the principles of sustainability by adopting the following:
    • For construction materials, we identified sources that reduced demand on natural resources.
    • Use of non-potable water (stormwater harvesting and use of recycled water).
    • Implement the waste hierarchy to the best of our ability.
    • Implement Best Practice environmental management for construction activities.
    • Identify and pursue environmental legacy outcomes for the community, proponents and the industry in general.
    • Continually improve environmental performance by periodically reviewing and evaluating our environmental policy, management systems and management plans to ensure that they are effective.
    • Promote environmental awareness among all employees and contractors to achieve the project's objectives.
