Springvale Road Rail Separation Project
The Springvale Road level crossing was the first rail crossing removed as part of the State Government's $38 billion Victorian Transport Plan. It has created safer and more reliable travel for train passengers, drivers and pedestrians.
The Australian and Victorian Governments announced $140 million for the project in end-April 2009.
The Springvale Road level crossing is one of the busiest in Melbourne. More than 50,000 vehicles, 218 trains and around 5,000 pedestrians share the same road space every day at this location.
Project Features
- The Belgrave and Lilydale train tracks were lowered by 8 metres.
- A new road bridge spanning the rail line was constructed to carry three lanes of traffic each way along Springvale Road, at the same level as the current road.
- A new railway station was built on the west side of Springvale Road, replacing Nunawading Station on the east side. It is now a Premium Station with better commuter facilities and is staffed from first train to last.
- A new pedestrian underpass was created to allow access to the station and people to cross Springvale Road safely.
Project Benefits
- Improved road and rail safety.
- Reduced congestion and more reliable travel times for drivers and road-based public transport along Springvale Road.
- Better public transport facilities for train and bus commuters.
- Safer conditions for pedestrians crossing Springvale Road.
